Covid and Medical students

Since the medical field has been working the front lines of this epidemic, I was curious how Covid has affected the perspective of a current medical student. I decided to interview one student majoring in nursing and got her thoughts on this crisis and how it is affecting her during these challenging times.

Viora Health: Has this pandemic made you realize you chose the right career path for yourself?

Delanie Rennie: A Second year Nursing Student, La Salle University, Philadelphia.“Being in Nursing school while in the midst of a Pandemic shaped the Nurse I hope and want to become. This Pandemic has made me realize that I am going into a profession that will save lives and is absolutely necessary. If I have learned anything in these past few weeks, it is that I belong in the major I am studying and am excited to become a Nurse so that I can help others.”

VH:Did you do any clinical work? Did you see any covid patients during that time?

DR:“Prior to the outbreak, the clinical I was placed in was a Nursing Home in Northeast Philadelphia. As the outbreak reached Pennsylvania, I watched the staff and residents grow in fear that this virus could greatly change the quality of life our residents were used to. Being that Nursing Homes hold the population that this virus has the most impact on, I worry for the staff and residents. Unfortunately our clinical was transitioned to online learning, so I am no longer in touch with the site I was at.”

VH: Some students in New York have had to work in the front lines even before graduation. How do you feel about that?

DR: “The students who worked before graduation are very brave and passionate about their career. It shows that they are in this field to help their communities.”

VH: What part of the hospital do you want to work in post graduation?

DR: “When I graduate I hope to work in the Emergency Room of a hospital and be at the front line of anything this world can throw at us.”
